Solace House C.A.R.E Project

Confronting Screen Addiction and its Impact on Mental Health, Development, and Brain Science.

About the C.A.R.E Project:

In today’s digital age, screen addiction is a growing crisis with profound implications for mental health and cognitive development. The Solace House C.A.R.E (Cell Phone Abuse Resistance Education) Project aims to address the dangers of excessive screen use, offering education, support, and intervention for families affected by digital addiction.

Partnership with Brad Huddleston

We are honoured to partner with Brad Huddleston, author of “Digital Cocaine”, who will lend his expertise to the C.A.R.E program. His work explores the deep impact of technology on the brain and mental health, providing valuable insights into the need for strict boundaries around screen time. Together, we will develop programs that highlight the importance of regulating screen time for healthier minds and futures.

What is Screen Addiction?

Screen addiction, also known as digital addiction, is characterized by the excessive and compulsive use of electronic devices like smartphones, computers, and video games. Just like substance addiction, screen overuse triggers dopamine release, creating a cycle of dependence that can have long-lasting effects on emotional regulation, social behavior, and cognitive development—especially in children. Lastly, it can have a profound impact on brain activity, leading to dopamine dysregulation, cognitive emotional consequences, and mental health crisis.

The Impact of Screen Addiction on the Brain:

  • Dopamine Deregulation: Screen addiction overstimulates the brain’s reward system, leading to dopamine deregulation, which impairs impulse control and increases the risk of stress, anxiety, and depression.

  • Cognitive and Emotional Consequences: The overuse of screens can delay cognitive development, cause social isolation, reduce attention spans, disrupt sleep, and foster issues like aggression and perfectionism.

  • Mental Health Crisis: Excessive screen use is increasingly linked to conditions like depression, anxiety, and self-esteem problems, particularly in young people.

Our Mission:

The CARE Project seeks to:

  1. Educate communities about the risks associated with screen addiction.

  1. Provide therapeutic support for those struggling with digital dependency.

  2. Promote healthier digital habits through workshops, resources, and community outreach.

  3. Advocate for structured screen time and offer guidelines tailored to age, device, and individual development stages.

Looking Ahead:

The C.A.R.E program will roll out a comprehensive suite of interventions, combining education, therapy, and digital detox strategies to help individuals and families regain control over their screen usage. We are developing age-appropriate guidelines for responsible screen time and will offer workshops and consultations to raise awareness about the dangers of unchecked screen use.
